US10 - No direct-to-consumer drug advertising

Arguments
Drug companies have a goal of maximizing profits. Doctors are in the business of maximizing positive health outcomes. Allowing drug companies to market their products to unsophisticated consumers who don't have the ability to filter like doctors will lead to abuse. Moreover, history has shown that direct marketing is good business but not good for consumers (see credit cards). And frankly, I don't need another piece of junk mail.
U.S. drug costs are exceptionally high, in part due to the misguided decision in 1997 to allow drug companies to advertise prescription drugs directly to consumers. The result has been airwaves and magazines full of advertisements that have done nothing to improve our health and have only added to health care costs. We should end this policy now.

Counterarguments
I am interested in these ads as a consumer. They often speak to problems I have, and why not spend money to deal with these things? I suppose at the end of the day the question is whether taking the advertised medications promotes health. If someone can make the argument that the advertising has negative health consequences, then maybe I would change my mind.
