US109 - National Public Wireless
Description
We need a big public works project to provide good jobs and stimulate the economy. Like we built the interstate highway system in the 50s, I think in this decade we should build a national public wireless network to ensure all citizens have internet access. This investment would pay dividends for years.

The cost of this project would not be exorbitant, less than $100 BN I'm sure.
Arguments

If everyone has access to free wireless, I'm sure manufacturers would deliver cheap access devices - like $50 or less for a basic (but durable and functional) wireless access gadget (e.g., Nook/Kindle).

See our discussion at DailyKos. People like it, though there are concerns that it's not the best choice technologically and that it would help Big Brother spy on us directly.

We have to update our public services for the times

The transition from mail to email is largely complete, and at some point we should stop scurrying across the country delivering pieces of paper and instead start building 21st century services like national public wireless.
