Arguments

How bout' we call the Cuban people and politely ask them if they need our help, rather than making assumptions. That nuclear thing was in the 60's wasn't it?

Fidel's regime oppresses its people and once brought us to the brink of nuclear armageddon. We should follow through on our message that you will not succeed if you do that, and try to start clean with his successor. It won't be long now.

Daily Kos Poll/Discussion

See our poll/discussion at Daily Kos. This idea is confirmed to be one of those where everyone says "Got my vote". The hold-up is part Cold War animosity but more the influence of Cuban-Americans in Florida who had their stuff nationalized by Castro.

Let's not put particular restrictions on them

Whether they want our particular help is a separate issue.

Oppressive regimes don't necessarily merit embargos

We don't embargo very many countries that have oppressive regimes.  The Cuban embargo is all about a vocal, but electorally important, Cuban immigrant minority in Florida.

Besides, if the goal is to ease the suffering of the oppressed Cubans, 60 years of embargo seem to have failed.
