Currently SAMHSAs definition of recovery for addictions is as follows:
- Improve health/wellness
- Self-directed life
- Strive to reach full potential
Notice how the word abstinence is not used within the definition when ASAM, TAAP along with many other leading health associations recognize addictions as a disease. In order to obtain appropriate and effective coverage, we need to recognize the realistic definition of addiction recovery to help provide the best quality care to patients/clients.
