G7 - Provide free effective cyber-protection to all
Description
With cyber crime costs already at over $110 billion/yr and growing there should be federal mandates that any seller of an operating system (PC, mobile phones, tablets, game consoles, etc..) to also provide a "top tier" antivirus and other protection software for the life of the product.

Anyone, even a small child, can and do use computers yet consumers have to pay to protect themselves and responsible parties from cyber crime.  There are free alternitives but they are more smoke and mirrors than actually providing any real effective protection from all but the most basic threats.  Even if purchased what is to stop antivirus companies from making virus on one side of the room and "fixing" them on the other?  Seems like "smart" business actually and besides being against the law (which rarely dissuades anyone when it comes to these all but anonymous cyber activities) the only real thing stopping them is morals and ethics ... put whatever weight you see fit on that.

With this being such a huge and growing problem not only for individual citizens but for national security as a whole the government should mandate anyone providing an operating system to also provide a top tier cyber protection solution as part of the product/OS.

Needing to make this choice vexes me as a consumer (4 replies)

Thanks for the tips. I agree that adequate safety controls should be included with the product. Antivirus software meeting regulatory standards should be included with new computers.
