US122 - Ban High-Capacity Semi-Automatic Guns
| Ban civilian ownership of guns with high-capacity magazines that can fire many rounds rapidly | |
|
|
|
Description
A common factor in all the mass shootings of recent years is that the gunmen have used guns with high-capacity magazines that allow them to get off many rounds very quickly. This is military-level firepower that civilians should not be able to acquire. A ban would greatly reduce the severity of mass shootings.
Arguments
The issue with high-capacity magazines is the volume of violence that can be squeezed into a short amount of time. The large-scale random undeserved killings of Newtown, Aurora, etc.
Counterarguments
Do not negotiate away our freedoms in the name of safety. From the United Nations to city council chambers across the nation, gun rights are constantly under attack from those who believe, mistakenly, that restricting our right to own firearms legally will somehow make us safer.

Banning the possession of certain weapons, without regard for whether the owner uses the weapons legally, excuses criminals by blaming the gun. I have opposed cosmetic intrusions by the federal government - such as the assault weapons ban and trigger locks - in order to preserve gun owner's rights. We cannot continue to infringe on the rights of law-abiding citizens.
