US24 - Registering to Vote
| Registering to vote has to be made simpler and easier than it is now, so that more people can participate in elections. | |

Description
It is very cumbersome for people in this country to register to vote. When elections roll around people who are not following every nuance of the election process suddenly find that they are not registered to vote and often it's too late. There has to be a process by which people who are eligible to vote are automatically registered and then it is up to them whether they want to vote or not. I am sure the dynamics of voting will change and more than the percentage of people who are eligible and who currently vote (around 50%) will go to the polls. The process is too political and partisan and often makes voter suppression easy to achieve.
Arguments
Increasingly the expectation is there should be a way to register online. Either this or universal registration is the answer, I think.
People should provide photo id's at the voting stations and fingerprint scanned (thumb) for elections. This should be linked to a governmental database for verification. This will eliminate recounts or fraud.
Counterarguments
This idea is too non-specific. What specific hurdles exist and need to be removed?
