Description
Fighting ghostlike entities (Terrorists) in the name of national security simply isn't the best use of $500 billion/yr+.
Arguments
I'm saying bring the men and woman back home to their families and use that $500-700 billion/yr to create the jobs they will need when they get back.
With the total cost of the 'War on Terror' estimated to pass the 1 trillion mark in 2012, we must stop and ask ourselves if this out-of-control spending accurately reflects our values. We spend more on our military activities than every other nation in the world, combined. Instead of redeploying troops, we need to redeploy where our money goes. With such urgent needs at home, Congress should use its power to reign in military spending and use that for building ladders of opportunity here at home.

We've been fighting these phantoms since the Korean War and I urge people to review the warning that President Eisenhower gave us in his "Military Industrial Complex" speech.

He understood the possibility of a coup and a shift away from democracy, once the MIC had gain enough influence. I contend that 40+ years after his warning, and the huge sums of taxpayer money that was given to them, year after year, that the MIC, now, and have had for a while, that influence. The next time troops are sent in harms way; reflect on the need to do so; who benefits, and Eisenhower's speech.

I hope our wisdom will grow with our power, and teach us, that the less we use our power the greater it will be.

The economy is in a crisis, and $500 billion is a lot of money. This would surely be better spent in helping businesses/ cutting taxes, and actually helping normal Americans, than fighting non-existant terrorists. We do need to fight terrorism, but we do not need to spend this much money!
Counterarguments
Although we have defeated Osama bin Laden and severely weakened al Qaeda, terrorists are still out there and still threaten the United States. We must remain vigilant about terrorism and be adept in fighting it in all its incarnations.

I'm sure the government has had some success in stopping terrorists and deterring others. Perhaps too much money is spent and perhaps it could be better spent (like education and empowerment campaigns so people aren't drawn to join terrorist organizations), but I don't support stopping these efforts altogether.
National security is directly linked to freedom both at home and abroad. Whether liberals in Washington choose to acknowledge it or not, we live in a dangerous world full of individuals that wish the United States harm. Unchecked, these individuals will stop at nothing to breach our security and limit our freedoms. As we saw on September 11, 2001, a group of 19 terrorists attacked our country's two largest symbols of prosperity: the World Trade Center twin towers. We will never forget those we lost that day, and we must fight for our freedom to ensure it never happens again.

When Can a War Waged Against Terrorism Stop?
This is simply a question. I am not placing my support on either side, but I am curious: does anyone here think that there is a definitive way to end a war (victoriously) against fundamentalists? Is it worth continuing the violence when the gains seem so slim and the costs so great? After all, the time is coming when a new generation of men and women may inherit this fight when they have no personal memories of the reasons for fighting it.
