Think about Florida in 2000. The vote was absolutely 50/50 -- Florida had NO PREFERENCE -- but its 0.01% margin determined the outcome for the whole country because states are winner-take-all. If we got rid of the electoral college, we would no longer have this 'swing state' distortion of voter power. Everyone's vote would count the same.

We need straightforward, one person, one vote elections

There is a reason for the electoral college. It's because we are a federation. If you eliminate it, states will no longer have a say in who is president. What this means is that urban states will roll over the interests of rural states because they are more populated. Basically CA, NY, and a few other urban centers will pick the president every time. If you don't live there, don't expect anyone campaigning near you or even considering what you think.

Popular vote makes sense for the TV/internet society (1 reply)

Also, the Senate will still have two votes per state, regardless of size.
