Description

Texas should stop using TAKS or any sort of standardized test to evaluate students.  Education should be individualized, rather than standardized.

Apparently, Texas has a five-year contract with Pearson Educational Measurement -- the publisher of TAKS -- for $100 million each year.  At the same time, Texas is cutting the education budget and dismissing teachers. TAKS is a terrible use of resources for education.

I wonder if pressure from Pearson keeps TAKS going, despite it's unpopularity.

Standardized testing like the TAKS test encourages teachers to "teach to the test" -- because schools get in trouble when scores are below minimum expectations, most have created a test based local curriculum. Students are made just to memorize answers that they expect to see on the test and don't actually learn.

New TAKS

The TAKS test has been replaced by the STAAR assessment.  The test still assesses the same subject areas but in high school students now take End of Course exams.  In any case, this is the first year of the STAAR and it is too soon to tell if this assessment will create a better picture of student skills and deficits.  One of the main problems with the TAKS was that it allowed teachers to "train" students to take the test rather than actual content.  Although, this is understandable, because so much funding for schools are based on these standards based assessments.
