Idea #US26 - End Oil Subsidies
End subsidies for oil companies
Argument
These companies should not only have their specific subsidies halted, but should be forced to pay taxes to pay for the money spent on securing their supplies by the US military. Not just the Iraq debacle, but the continued presence of massive naval and air power around the world and especially in the Persian Gulf.
Counterarguments
Idea #USCA1 - Alternatives to fossil fuels
We need alternatives to fossil fuels.
Counterargument
A hydrogen fuel system would be very expensive. It's not clear that it would have any advantages over other carbon neutral solutions that are much further along. Also, it still takes energy to make hydrogen - there is no hydrogen fairy!
This could be worth revisiting if direct solar hydrolysis become practical. But it's more likely that other things like fuel from algae will win, and would require a lot less $$$ on the delivery and storage end. The government should invest heavily in research for all of these technologies, and then let the market decide.
Idea #US249 - Repeal the Seventeenth Amendment
The Seventeenth Amendment is responsible for the corruption and crony capitalism that exists within our government today
Counterargument
What are you talking about? State Congressmen are cheap and easy to buy off.
How is less democracy going to make it better?
What we need is really good campaign finance controls...

Idea #US26 - not all subsidies are created equal.
(view source)Oil companies get specific deductions that you and and your non-oil business dont.
Clearly they dont need them, as they dominate the top earning companies most years.
YOU are subsidizing them, regardless of whether or not you use their products.
YOU are also heavily funding a military that guarantees their supply.
See How It Works!
